Tips for Keeping Heat Inside and Cold Outside

Did you ever have a parent or grandparent tell you to close the door because they’re not paying to heat or cool outside? It sounds funny, but when you’re the one paying utility costs, it makes a lot more sense. We have some tips that can help you keep heat inside your home while cold air remains outside without sneaking in.

Keep reading to learn our tips for maximizing heat for the second half of the winter season. These steps will help you maintain a consistently comfortable atmosphere, save money on energy costs, and reduce strain on your heating system, reducing the likelihood of needing a heating repair in Wilmington, NC

Seal Air Leaks

If you want the heat to stay inside, you need to identify all of the places where it can leak out easily. Common areas for air leaks include around doors, windows, and household vents that lead outside. You can stop by a local hardware store and purchase weather stripping to use around doors.

Sometimes, you can caulk around windows, but other times, window issues require professional attention. For the winter season, you may also want to look into thermal curtains, which are specifically designed to keep heat in your home and protect you from cold temperatures outside.

Add More Insulation

Your home may have had adequate insulation when it was first built, but insulation can deteriorate as years go by. After around 15 years more needs to be added, but it doesn’t hurt to add more before that if you think it will help keep heat inside. It is a financial investment, but it is one that can pay off by lowering your energy costs and also helping you feel more comfortable.

Close Doors

When you shut doors to rooms that aren’t being occupied, you help heat to stay in each individual space. Instead of having heat from your main living space disperse to other areas, it can stay better contained where you are.

Reverse Ceiling Fan Rotation

Did you know that your ceiling fans can circulate air in either direction? You may not even realize that ceiling fan rotation matters, but it does. In the winter, you want to change the settings so that your fans rotate clockwise.

This forces the rising air to reach the ceiling, disrupting the trapped heat and distributing it around the room. The heat then distributes better throughout the room to make your home feel more comfortable. Just remember to switch the settings back in the summer so that airflow pushes down to make the air feel cooler.

Maximize Sunlight

While thermal curtains are fantastic, it’s also a good idea to keep windows open when the sun is shining. The warmth from the sun can help heat your home during the day. Then you can close the curtains again in the evening and overnight when it gets dark again.

Invest in Professional Maintenance

Regular service for your heater or furnace ensures it runs efficiently and effectively to heat your home without straining. Annual service appointments offer the best results since your unit maintains energy efficiency year after year, and problems can be addressed early.
